How to prepare if you live near a volcano
What the alert levels actually mean, how to protect yourself from ashfall and why the deadliest volcanic hazard travels down the valley, not the slope.
A volcano gives more warning than any other natural hazard and gets less attention for it. Observatories watch activity climb for weeks before the mountain does anything visible, and they publish that state on a public scale. The problem is rarely missing information: it is that people do not know what the level they are reading means, or which of a volcano’s several hazards is the one that reaches their house.

A volcano’s hazards are not one thing
Talking about “an eruption” as a single event is what leads people to prepare for the wrong one. A volcano produces distinct phenomena with very different reach and speed, and not all of them affect you even if you live close.

Before: work out which hazard is yours
Two houses the same distance from the crater can face completely different risks depending on whether they sit on a ridge or at the bottom of a drainage. Before buying anything, answer three questions:
Is my house in a valley that drains the volcano? If yes, the lahar is your main hazard and your plan is vertical: knowing which way is up and how long it takes you.
Which way does the prevailing wind blow? Ash falls where the wind takes it. Observatory hazard maps usually mark that direction, and it decides whether your problem lasts a day or months.
What is the evacuation route, and where does it cross a river? Bridges over channels draining the volcano are the first thing lost. A route that depends on one bridge is not a route.
During: what each warning changes
If the observatory raises the level to watch or warning, the priority shifts from preparing to moving.
- Get out of the valley floor before you get out of the area. Gaining height above the channel matters more than gaining miles from the crater.
- Do not wait to see anything. A lahar can come down a river under clear skies with the volcano apparently quiet.
- If ash is falling, stay inside. Windows and doors shut, ventilation off, and only go out with a respirator and goggles if you truly must.
- Listen to the observatory, not to social media. The levels are set by the scientific agency, and changes go out through official channels.
After: the ash stays
When the eruption ends, the long problem begins. Ash does not dissolve in rain: it compacts, weighs more wet and blocks drains for months.
- Clear ash off the roof before it rains. Wet ash can weigh twice as much as dry, and that is when roofs fail.
- Sweep dry or dampen lightly, never flood it. Pressure washing turns ash into a paste that clogs downspouts.
- Avoid driving if you can. Ash blocks air filters, and running wipers on a dry windshield grinds it opaque.
- Watch anyone with asthma or a respiratory condition. They feel suspended ash first, and every passing vehicle lifts it again.

Frequently asked questions
Do volcanoes give warning before they erupt?
Almost always, and that is the big difference from an earthquake. Observatories detect earthquakes, ground deformation and gas changes days or weeks ahead, and raise the alert level before anything is visible. What cannot be predicted precisely is the exact hour or the size.
Is lava the biggest danger?
No. Lava moves slowly and you can usually walk ahead of it. What kills are pyroclastic flows, lahars and, at a distance, ash: phenomena that move at tens or hundreds of miles per hour.
Does a cloth mask help against volcanic ash?
Very little. Fine ash particles pass through cloth and surgical masks. The recommended protection is a well-fitted N95 respirator; for children, who rarely have a size that seals, staying indoors is what works.
How far away is far enough?
There is no single number: it depends on the volcano and the hazard. Ash can travel hundreds of miles, lahars tens of miles down a river valley, and pyroclastic flows usually stay within the nearest few. What matters is your volcano's hazard map, not a general distance.
