Lahars: the volcanic hazard that travels down the valley
The deadliest volcanic hazard of the last century is not lava: it is mud moving down a valley, sometimes with no eruption and under a clear sky.
When people picture dying in a volcanic eruption, they picture lava. The record of the last century says otherwise: the volcanic hazard that has taken the most lives is mud. Not a swollen river, but a dense mass of water, ash and rock moving down the same valley where a town was built precisely because there was a river.
Why it reaches so far
A lahar does not behave like water. The sediment load gives it density and force: it carries boulders the size of a car and holds its speed mile after mile because the valley itself channels it.
That explains two things that surprise almost everyone:
It reaches much farther than people assume. Towns that feel safe because they sit tens of miles from the crater are in the path if the river running through them starts on the volcano.
It does not respect apparent calm. A lahar can form from rain falling on ash deposits left by an earlier eruption. The mountain does nothing, the day is clear, and the valley fills anyway.
How you know it is coming
Lahars give little time, but they do not always arrive silently. Signs described by volcano observatories:
- A low, growing roar up-valley, often described as a train or thunder that does not stop.
- Sudden changes in the river: a rapid rise, water turning muddy at once, or — more deceptive — a sudden drop in flow.
- A smell of sulphur or turned earth.
- Sirens or alerts from the warning systems installed in several volcanic valleys around the world.
If you live in a lahar valley, those signs are the order to climb. They are not the signal to go and look.
What to do, in order
- Get out of the channel. Perpendicular to the valley, away from the river course.
- Climb. High ground, as high as you can reach quickly. A lahar occupies the valley floor: safety is in height, not in distance down-valley.
- Do not cross the river. Not by bridge, not by ford. The instinct to get to the other side is what kills people on bridges.
- Do not go back for anything. Lahars arrive in pulses: the second can be larger than the first, and hours later.

Preparation here is about geography, not gear. Walk your climbing route on a quiet day and time it. Check whether it works at night and in rain, which is when you will need it. And agree with your family that whoever is home climbs without waiting for anyone: the meeting point goes uphill, not at the door.
